OtterliVeganBot

If you run a food blog or recipe site and you've spotted OtterliVeganBot in your logs, you're in the right place. This page explains who we are, what the bot collects, and how to get in touch if you'd rather it left you alone.

Otterli is a vegan-focused recipe search and meal planner. We host only our own recipes; otherwise we feature curated third-party recipes, which we point people to the sites that write them, including yours.

What OtterliVeganBot collects

From each page it visits, the bot collects:

  • The ingredient list
  • OpenGraph metadata — title, description, and thumbnail image

It does not collect the method or instruction text, and it does not store full-size or reframed images. The thumbnail is used as supplied, at the size your own OpenGraph tags provide.

How Otterli uses it

We use the ingredient list to power search — someone looking for "what can I make with chickpeas and spinach" finds your recipe among the results. Every recipe card links back to the original page on your site, and we never mark those links rel="nofollow".

We're sending you traffic, not replacing you. Nobody reads your method or sees your full recipe on Otterli — they come to your site for that.

Crawl behaviour

  • robots.txt is honoured, including rules specifically targeting User-agent: OtterliVeganBot.
  • Rate limited to roughly one request every 2–3 seconds per domain, or the crawl_seconds set in robots.txt, so it shouldn't show up as a load spike.
  • Conditional requests — we use If-Modified-Since and If-None-Match so we're not re-downloading pages that haven't changed.

Opting out

If you'd rather OtterliVeganBot didn't crawl your site, add a rule for it in your robots.txt and we'll pick it up automatically on our next visit — no need to tell us as well, though you're welcome to.

If you'd like us to remove a recipe already in our index, or stop crawling before your robots.txt change takes effect, email us at support@otterli.com. We'll honour the request promptly, no explanation needed.
